In this society we have to face many different people that involve gender issues. Different personalities with either gender have created a culture for others to follow or to be in. It has both positive or negative effects to different individuals throughout history and it led to many different gender issues revolving gender inequality. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Gender Equality and Culture" essay for you Create order These problems have been set in stone and often brought up in history books which the following generations use to learn about past events regarding gender inequality such that, women are treated and viewed unequal to men. Women carry different responsibilities compared to those that men have, where they must be stronger than men in order to compete with others in society. They have to struggle with these responsibilities and try to prove themselves that they are capable of handling situations in order to survive in the biased cultural norms. For instance, in the novel Sing, Unburied, Sing written by Jesmyn Ward, there are various characters that have different styles of living based on their gender roles. There are several examples from the novel where the characters have to face cultural norms and social standards which have greatly affected their lives and it causes similar results to many others that had the same effect on their lives. One of the characters which shows as an example of a female character struggling within society would be Leonie, the mother of two kids named Jojo and Kayla. Leonie has trouble taking care of the kids and face difficulties from a mixture of trauma, structural oppression, and her own flaws. The relationship between Leonie and her kids can be seen as painful. Because the lack of parental support leads to a cruel relationship between mother and her two children. They are left without a parent to look after them leaving Jojo being the older brother to take care of his younger baby sister, Kayla. One of the reasons for Leonie’s mistreatment towards her kids is because of drug use. Her usage of drugs is related to the influence made by her husband, Michael as well as his absence that leads to lack of spousal support. Leonie also had been led to use drugs because of the traumatic event by the murder of her brother, Given. Leonie loved her younger brother very much but unfortunately she lost her brother because he was murdered by her husband’s cousin. Given was Leonie’s life line which supported her as a mother of her two lovely children. However, after his death she missed him dearly which caused her to result to drug use. When Leonie takes a lot of drugs she becomes high and this leads to Given to appear in spirit. Because of this Leonie consistently is using drugs as a way to see her brother for moral support to prevent her from self destructing. Another reason of Leonie’s drug use is influenced by Michael because he has his own traumas which led to his own drug use and leads to him being sentenced to prison. After struggling with her brother’s death and her husband’s absence she allows the usage of drugs to keep her from insanity. Leonie also faces numerous racial issues in the society where she lives. The question of Leonie’s ability to be mother is clear that she is unable to be a supportive mother with her extreme usage of drugs. Without a clear mind she is clearly incompetent to show love for her kids because she is blinded by love for her husband and brother. In Prezi.com, it shows that â€Å"Leonies incapability to depict the stereotypical gender roles of a mother and a daughter seems to be related with the fact that she was not able to identify with her mother.† The face that Leonie being unable to identify herself with her mother shows her unable to portray herself as a supportive and loving mother towards her two children. This leads to a negative stereotype where a mother is portrayed as loving, caring and supportive to her kids which Leonie lacks towards her own children. This is where gender can be seen as sociocultural construction. The fact that she is a mother of her kids should bring out her responsibilities to take care of them because they are depende nt of her however she fails to do so because of her right state of mind. The lack of her parental presence leads to Jojo developing his own characteristics and views within society. In scalar.usc.edu, it shows â€Å"those characteristics and traits sociocultural considered appropriate to males and females† meaning the dimension of gender is gender identity or thinking of as male or female are viewed differently from one another. This shows that Leonie’s approach on gendered identities of how men take drugs just the same when women take drugs. The difference between the two genders resulting in drug use differ because men take drugs due to stress from working, making hard decisions and face the consequences, however for women taking drugs is a different approach. Women drug use creates different results like carelessness towards their children, losing the ability to show good signs towards their children and setting bad examples as a parental figure to them. Another ne gative stereotype can be masculinity. For instance, in The Washington Post, it said â€Å"A real man is stoic and unemotional. A real man is physically strong a protector. A real man doesn’t show weakness, ask for or show vulnerability.† This compares to Leonie being a mother because it puts herself in the position to support her children and pull off a strong demeanor in front of them. It caused her to question herself can she be the strong parent, who shows no emotion and provide for her family while her husband is gone and also be the loving motherly figure? There are many cases where Leonie had trouble being the so call â€Å"man† in front of her kids. The man is seen responsible for the kids, taking care of everything, protecting the kids and giving the love to the kids. However, Leonie fails to do so because she cannot control her emotions and keep a straight mind in order to provide the guidance and support which her children need. Obviously, Leonie can’t be the man for her two children because of her incapabilities to control herself from the usage of drugs. Her unstable emotions and inability to face her responsibilities causes her to show the lack of parenthood which she should towards Jojo and Kayla. This reveals that Leonie needs a male figure in her life to keep her in check and be the loving mother for her two children. That figure used to be her brother, Given who was there for her when she needed someone to talk to and helped her face the gender and racial struggles in her life. But unfortunately, with the lack of her brother’s presence as well as her husbands she is unable to control a straight mind which causes her to result in using drugs to vision her brother. This reminds us of Leonie’s feminine side where she is in need of the male figure in her life. She is unable to be the provider for the family because she believes she lacks the characteristics to be a loving mother for her two children. Leonie’s portrayal of stereotypical feminine traits is related to the gender roles within the book. In page 48, it shows â€Å"I didn’t want to go in the house just in case Mama decided to give me one of her plant lessons.† This show she doesn’t want to get lectured by Mama because she is afraid and is aware she will be lectured again and again being a bad example. She acknowledges that she is a lacking mother when she admits, she is â€Å"The one I’m never good enough for. Never mama for. Just Leonie, a name wrapped around the same disappointed syllables I’ve heard from Mama, from Pop, even from Given, my whole fucking life.† (Leonie, 147) Leonie’s main issue is dealing with herself and how she doesn’t trust herself well enough to take care of others, she is aware of her flaws but she doesn’t try to change them. She desires to be the dependent in her family and is blinded by love for her husband which causes her to disregard her responsibilities. â€Å"I stand there watching my children comfort each other () I could reach out and touch them both, but I don’t.† (Leonie, 101) Without a male figure in her life, Leonie will continue to be the helpless mother who believes the male figure in her children’s life should be responsible for the love of her children. This is where Jojo’s personality and characteristics’ develop to catch his mother’s faults. For the young boy Jojo who is unusually serious and mature for his age because of his mother, Leonie’s irresponsibility means that he has effectively taken over as parent of his three-year-old sister, Kayla. Even though Jojo is intelligent for his age he still doesn’t understand Leonie. In the book, Jojo is a strong kid that picks up after his mother’s slack by taking care of his little sister and learning while watching everything happen around him. He shows much love towards his Pop, River who is his mother’s father. He’s desperate to imitate his grandfather, and this is his attempt to prove that he’s old enough to look at death like a man should. In TheAlantic.com â€Å"Jojo’s understanding of manhood is complicated by both the people and places in his family’s history.† This shows that Jojo is living in a difficult family whose mother is black that struggle with the use of drugs. His father is white who sent to the br utal Parchman penitentiary. For Jojo who is growing up at this young age to have both parent struggling is tough especially when he has a three year old sister to take care of as well. Jojo has his own responsibility to help and take care of his sister, he feels the responsibility of being the opposite of his mother and father by setting good example for his younger sibling. Overall the story shows the relationship between Leonie and Jojo play in different gender roles. They have shown their example of how gender roles have affected their personal life and how their gender roles correspond with one another to support the family. Leonie’s lacks the characteristics of a motherly figure because she does not have a male figure by her side. This allows Jojo to be responsible and try to make up for her lacking characteristics. This shows how their gender role presents itself shown by their characters and how they play out throughout the story.

Experiences at Caribbean Union College-Personal Narrative...

Experiences at Caribbean Union College-Personal Narrative Leaving home to study at Caribbean union college gave me several positive and negative experiences I will never forget. I arrived in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on the 6th of September 2001.from there I had a long drive from the Piarco International airport to maracas valley, st. Joseph. On arrival, students from several parts of the world greeted me. It was from there on I had several experiences. Firstly, after coming to Caribbean Union College, I have been able to become a more responsible person. As a matter of fact, I have been able to wash and iron for myself. Secondly, since this institution is a religious one, I have become a more spiritual person, so†¦show more content†¦About three weeks after I started the program, I lost ten pounds (10lbs). I was so impressed that I am presently thinking of playing football, in which I think I will burn more fat. My clothing fits me better, and most of all, I feel healthier and I move around easier. Just attending college my self-esteem has increased and I am looking towards the future, where I plan to open my own trucking and construction company. I also plan to franchise it throughout the Caribbean in time to come. While I have had several positive and negative experiences at Caribbean Union College, I have also had several ones. Firstly, living in the dormitory is very irritating and challenging for me, because its physical appearance is very poor. Just to mention one of many problems, termites are presently eating away the wardrobe and cupboards, wood ants in the roof and sleeping on very thin mattresses. In addition to that, since living here, I have lost contact with my television programs, because the senior dorm students are always in the television room. Another thing is that everyday both morning and evenings; I have to go to worship, and what makes me feel uncomfortable is to sign an attendance slip, which to me, is forcing people to go to worship. However, the thing that irritates me the most is the unhealthy way I have to wake up in the mornings, the Chaplin gets up very early and goes and talks on the PA system andShow MoreRelatedOne Significant Change That Has Occurred in the World Between 1900 and 2005. What Is the Role of Social Enterprise In Society Free Essays

Social entrepreneurship in modern society is such a humane form of entrepreneurship that focuses on the benefits that society may reap. Simply put, entrepreneurship becomes a social enterprise when it transforms social capital in an approach that affects society positively. It is viewed as advantageous because the success of social entrepreneurship depends on many factors related to social impact that traditional corporate businesses do not prioritize. We will write a custom essay sample on What Is the Role of Social Enterprise In Society? or any similar topic only for you Order Now Social entrepreneurs recognize immediate social problems, but also seek to understand the broader context of an issue that crosses disciplines, fields, and theories. Gaining a larger understanding of how an issue relates to society allows social entrepreneurs to develop innovative solutions and mobilize available resources to affect the greater society. Unlike traditional corporate businesses, social entrepreneurship ventures focus on maximizing gains in social satisfaction, rather than maximizing profit gains. Despite the established definition social entrepreneurship remains a difficult concept to define, since it may be manifested in multiple forms. Social entrepreneur is a person who pursues an innovative idea with the potential to solve a community problem. While conventional entrepreneurs typically measure performance in profit and return the social entrepreneurs take into account a positive return to society and attempts to promote broad social, cultural and environmental goals often associated with the voluntary sector. These individuals are willing to take on the risk and effort to create positive changes in society through their initiatives. Successful examples of social entrepreneurship include microfinance institutions, need based community educational programs, providing banking and ATM services in underserved areas, helping children orphaned by epidemic diseases, and many more. The foremost object of a social entrepreneur is not to earn a profit, but to bring widespread improvements in the society. Social entrepreneurship is an attempt to draw upon business techniques to find solutions to social problems. This concept may be applied to agricultural sector in wider perspectives by the research and extension scientists in a range of areas with different size, aim, and beliefs. Agri- livestock based activities In present day life large numbers of single old couples, young and job couples, working men and women, students, etc. are residing in apartments and colonies of sub-urban and urban areas for their currier. Majority of them have neither time nor knowledge and strength for numbers of works in the day to day life. It may be good opportunity for service as well as social entrepreneurship. Under â€Å"social entrepreneurship† activities may include; home delivery of milk, milk products, animal products, bread, butter, grocery items, cut as well as fresh vegetables, flowers and garlands for home worship, herbal products, cut flowers, articles of gardening, commodities for small-small functions, and many more. The individual demand schedule for such items may be a small but cumulative and total demand schedule will be quite a large amount. Small scale pet clinics at pet owners’ door step, veterinary consultancy services in remote and hilly areas may be few such steps for veterinary profession. The demand of animal based products are finding good place in the diversified food basket of all the people. These include and may be included by motivation i.e. Fluid milk (pasteurized, flavoured, sterilized, toned, homogenized, etc. milk); Functional milk products (Low calorie dairy milk products, vitamin ; mineral fortified products, probiotic dairy products); Fat rich products, heat desiccated as well as acid coagulated, fermented, and many such kinds of dairy products. Large number of unemployed graduates is running for small and petty jobs, they may be the job giver rather job seekers through such activities. They may identify activities as per their choice and may form a group or co-operative society for this work and in due course of time may deploy other unemployed literates and illiterates young force of the area and activity as per the size of enterprise. Besides there are many other need based activities that may be started for the society like; dog crutch, training, modern nursing. In the process of social entrepreneurship one thing entrepreneur must realize that, numbers of persons work till late night and accordingly they wake-up late in the morning. Therefore regular disturbance in this process of social entrepreneurs is intolerable. As per current culture they also want time tag and management from entrepreneurs. One of the prime protections in this enterprise required is the trust of public and your commitments. Key categories of social enterprises Groups focused on social entrepreneurship may be divided into several categories viz.; community-based enterprises, socially responsible enterprises,   social services professionals, and socio-economic enterprises. Community-based enterprises are based on social ventures of an entire community that uses its culture and capital to empower itself as an entire enterprise. There are organizations dedicated to empowering social entrepreneurs, connecting them with mentors, strengthening their enterprise models, and preparing them for capital investments. Help of such organizations may also be taken to initiate the enterprise. Models of social entrepreneurship These may fall under three different models, applicable in different situations and socio-economic environments; Non-Profit influenced: This model influences resources to respond social needs. It makes innovative use of available funds to impact need bur are more traditional in dealing with issues. They are distinguished by their innovative approaches. Hybrid Non-Profit: This structure is willing to use profit to sustain its operations. It can take variety of operations. Such organizations are often created to deal with government or market failures, as they generate revenue to sustain the operation to meet out loans, grants, and other forms of traditional funding. Community Business Project: This model aims to fetch changes through social means. They lack funding and hence forced to become for profit but not to the extent as others due to social service. Role of Technology The Internet and social network sites have been pivotal resources for the success and collaboration of many social entrepreneurs. Presently, Internet has become useful in disseminating information in shortest possible time. In addition, Internet allows pooling of design resources using open source principles. These media allow ideas to be heard by broader audiences, help networks and investors to develop globally, and to achieve their goals with little or no start-up capital. For example, open source appropriate technology as a sustainable development paradigm enables people all over the world to collaborate on solving local problems just as open source software development leverages collaboration. The promise of livestock and allied sectors development will be realized through the spread of new ideas and solutions to the challenges facing producers and consumers. Innovations and opportunities have potential to help millions of smallholder farmers and build better lives for themselves and their families. But it is also true that innovations alone do not create sustainable solutions in agriculture and sustainable rural development. These new solutions endure only when social entrepreneurs have a community-level understanding, build a broad citizen base of support, introduce incentives for participation, and bring down traditional barriers to entry. This partnership will allow launching social entrepreneurs and their powerful, pattern-changing ideas that are built on this bottom up approach. Additionally, as a product of the increased number of entrepreneurs in this area and their broad base of supporters, agencies will be able to identify transformative principles that will ultimately revolutionize the field. From a very macro point of view, social entrepreneurs want large scale societal change in realigning our otherwise misconstrued social pyramid to place our rural communities, farmers and women artisans at the very top for the respect and standing they deserve. Economic, environmental ; human development are tools they want to use to truly create that fundamental change and they are learning to differentiate their decisions from the typical startup way. Low cost Franchising: It is one of the ways to take-up new venture. Franchises with lower costs can make it easier to plan to be their own boss. Here is a look to harvest successful opportunities. Primary stakeholders of the system: government ; policy makers, scientists ; research organizations, local farmers ; rural communities, industry, private enterprises, entrepreneurs, partners, supporting organizations ; collaborators regular consumers. Franchises decided to connect four concepts: Lab – Farm – Machine – Market, with the aim of creating a business that connects the benefits for local farmers and industry with reformation of livestock and agriculture sector. The challenge in this way is that we as a business are not yet capable to innovate in laboratories, develop best product preparation methods or processing machinery. But what we can do to fulfill the need for organized effort to create a confluence and an ecosystem for various stakeholders to collaborate, deliberate, co-create and develop. Franchises act as enablers and facilitators to set up and develop the entire industrial ecosystem with the vision to reform the sector with its active role in the socio-economic uplift of farmers. They also work in collaboration with various public and private organizations that ranges from research institutes, government bodies and NGOs. Their final aim remains to create a self sustaining high yielding, high value livestock industry that involves a value chain of livestock producers, processors, packaging companies, marketers to engage local farmers and women artisans from the rural communities. Through startup: Social entrepreneurship may also be started through a startup company. A startup is an entrepreneurial venture or a new business in the form of a company, partner, temporary organization designed to search for a repeatable and scalable business. These companies generally newly created and are innovative in a process of development, validation and research for target markets. Finally the essence of startups is generally related to the concepts of ambition, innovation, scalability, and growth. Startup as an â€Å"organization formed to search for a repeatable and scalable business model. Thinking in this way may lead the livestock as well as social sector to a new direction. The budding veterinarians and other concerned with livestock sector may play their vital role to boostup the sector. How to cite What Is the Role of Social Enterprise In Society?, Papers

Forces And Weights Investigation Using Trolleys And free essay sample

Ticker-Tape Essay, Research Paper Planning: To execute this experiment, we will work in braces each taking a certain figure of consequences and so seting them together. Puting up the setup will be one of the hardest parts of the experiment. The first thing we will make, is set our board a T an slope carefully adjusted so that no force will alter the velocity of our streetcar, intending one time its traveling, it keeps traveling. This will be setup utilizing a few books. After that is done, we will infix a block at the terminal of the tabular array to do certain that the experiment works swimmingly. Then, we will take a power adapter to power our heart timer dispenser. We will link them utilizing stoppers and, when the clip is right, power it to do it work. We will so cut a piece of yarn about the length between the land and the tabular array, plus the length between the terminal of the tabular array and the beginning of our board. We will write a custom essay sample on Forces And Weights Investigation Using Trolleys And or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page To this twine, we shall attach different weights as our experiment goes on. We will so cut some self-marking heart timer paper and topographic point in the heart timer machine. Then, we shall attach the twine to the streetcar on the forepart, and the heart timer paper at the dorsum. We will so, be ready. Except for one thing, our safety. We have to do certain that we are safe in every manner and that no injury could perchance come to us. We must be careful non to put our pess next to the falling weights and non to lodge our fingers in the electric sockets. After we are certain that everything is safe, we will be able to get down. We will take a weight, say 100 gms, we shall enter that weight, and so we shall at the same time turn on the electricity and allow travel of the streetcar with the weights attached onto the terminal. Once the streetcar has bounced back on the elastic set, we shall turn off the electricity and take the heart timer paper ( t.t.p. ) for farther record. We so, shall alter the weight and get down afresh. We shall put some new t.t.p. in the t.t.p. machine and recommence what we have merely done. We shall reiterate this process several times altering the weights, doing certain that our safety come foremost. Obtaining grounds: We will do certain to enter adequate consequences to do an accurate and definite decision. We will maintain a record of consequences by spliting our heart timer paper in 1/10 of 2nd strips that will lodge on graph paper as a graph demoing the addition ( or lessening ) in the velocity of our streetcar. This method of entering our consequences should be really clear as we will non be making excessively much authorship. If our consequences vary, or we lose our consequences so I will remake the experiment. We will hold to do certain to enter consequences in a safe manner as our safety comes foremost. We will do certain non to acquire in the manner if electric currents and our consequences will hold to be analysed in a safe environment. The equipment we will utilize will enter the consequences every bit accurately as is possible. It makes 50 points per second and I don # 8217 ; t believe that with our limited financess we could get a machine that is more accurate. Therefore, our consequences, machine wise, will be of the extreme truth. It is human mistake that will determine failure in truth. Therefore, we will be every bit careful as possible to do certain that we do non enforce an mistake into the experiment. Our consequences will be made over a really broad scope. We will mensurate out 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 gms in the weights to perform our experiments. This should ensure a wide range of results that will help our conclusion be accurate. To record our results, we will make graphs (as seen in evaluating evidence) of averagely 1/10 of a second in between all of our records. We cannot effectively make a table to show our results, a graph is the only real way, apart from writing about it. I will repeat some results if I am not satisfied with a certain one (or if I lose it). The main point I am trying to emphasise is that we will have to have enough results over a wide enough range to draw a firm and accurate conclusion. Safety is still an important key thing in this whole experiment but in the end, it is the results that count. Analysing evidence and drawing conclusions: From the graphs we saw that the heavier the weight attached to the end of the trolley, the faster it went, and thus the larger the graphs became. The four hundred gram graph speed went up to 165 when the 100 gram graph went up to 120. As w e see from the acceleration, the trolley pulled by 100 grams went 122.22cm/s/s. The trolley pulled by the 200 grams went 130cm/s/s and the trolley pulled by the 400 grams went 168.75cm/s/s. This definitely shows an increase in the acceleration of the trolley. That is basically what we have discovered. We have displayed our results in the above charts. The patterns are quite distinguished, there is no mistaking, they are all on the rise. My conclusion is that, the more weight pushed, or pulled, on an object (for example the trolley), the more force exerted on the object in a certain direction. Therefore, if the string has more weight on the end, then a greater force will be pulling the trolley with little friction to stop. The force is important in a moving object but the friction is also of great importance. If the ground is rough, then it will move with less ease. If it is smooth, then the object will go further. The previous scientific knowledge I had was a very obvious one. I, ob viously knew, that if a greater weight was added, then the trolley would go faster. This is common sense to practically everyone in this world today. Evaluating Evidence: This experiment was far from flawless. I made many (human) errors. On on of the graphs, I measured 7 dots out instead of 5. This was a mistake that I could have avoided if I simply had put more time into doing my graph. Also, I lost the first set of my t.t.ps. I had to redo them all, in about 5 minutes. I had to run to get my apparatus set up. Do the three experiments, then run to clean everything set up. This still made me receive good results, however, as the t.t.p. machine works perfectly if properly operated. My graphs were about as comprehensive as I could make them, which wasn’t very, and I got a little confused when I had to work out my acceleration and I probably have some inaccurate results in that area. Otherwise, everything went fine. There were, of course, minor glitches that didn’t really affect the actual turnout of the experiment. Like, for example, the fact that I ran out of pages in my book so I had to rip them out. This has nothing to do with the experiment, but in the end, affects really only the morale of the person doing the experiment. If that person is discouraged, then the outcome of the experiment may not be as good as the person won’t have set his/her heart into it.

Ethics and abortion

Introduction Ethical decision making in health and patient care revolves around making good choices, which will not harm the parties involved. However, ethical dilemmas may arise when more than one choice is available, and neither will result in wrong or right consequences.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Ethics and abortion specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The experiences, beliefs and values of the healthcare provider/ stakeholder will determine how one arrives upon a decision; abortion is one such situation. In weighing the options concerning whether to perform an abortion and how to care for the patient, a healthcare entity must consider the legal implications, the patient’s and provider’s beliefs as well as the health effects of that decision. Abortion is an ethical issue in the health profession because it touches on human rights. Opinions become divergent on this matter because stakeholders ha ve different ways of defining personhood (whether an entity is a person). It is generally agreed that taking away a human life is unethical. However, abortion debates centre on deciding whether the fetus is a human being or not. If a person deems the fetus as a person, then it possesses human rights that should be protected. Conversely, if the ethical decision maker thinks a fetus is not a person, then he or she might treat an abortion as an ethical decision. However, the mother’s autonomy and independence to make decisions about her own body must also be considered. Issues of quality of life also come into the picture because if an abortion endangers the life of a mother, then one must give primacy to the life of the mother over the unborn child. A mother’s interest could conflict with that of a fetus, and this will determine which path will be chosen. One should note that the United States provides safe abortion with only 0.07% requiring some form of hospitalization. Healthcare professionals must familiarize themselves with these arguments in order to know where their options lie. However, their decisions have legal implications. Prior to performing an abortion, a healthcare institution or provide must consider the legal implications of doing so. In the United States, federal states have different interpretations of abortion. However, all states generally agree that providers must not be forced to perform abortion or providers should not coerce women into having abortions. Since the topic is quite controversial, then most parties agree that restrictions on the same are reasonable. They also believe that medically necessary abortions have to take place. However it is the nature of these restrictions that they do not agree on. Some states restrict providers while others focus on women. When targeting providers, they focus on physicians, hospitals after certain periods of maturity, required reporting, and refusal clauses.Advertising Looking f or essay on health medicine? Oklahoma laws allow medical practitioners to restrict information about a fetus with disability if they think it will cause the mother to have an abortion. In Utah, willful termination of a pregnancy is treated as manslaughter or murder. States may also target women by restricting funding, insurance coverage, waiting periods, accessing counseling information and requiring them to listen to the fetus’ heartbeat. In funding, seventeen states in the country fund abortion in Medicaid while others have been forced by state courts. Some states like South Dakota only pay for funding when a mother’s life is in danger. In North Carolina, women cannot get access to funding for Medicaid (Meckstroth 12). All the above informatio n is necessary in deciding whether an abortion will take place or not. If a medical practitioner gives precedence to his person beliefs without incorporating these laws, then he or should could be acting morally but illegally. However, healthcare professionals have the right to conscientious refusal to perform an abortion. This is the point whether their ethical values come into play. For instance, if a physician finds an anomaly in the fetus, the choice to refer an abortion or to refrain from telling the mother in states that allow it has ethical implications. It could be violating a mother’s right to information and privacy, but it could also be upholding the provider’s values of respect for all human life as well as the baby’s rights. In order to come up with the best decision, the provider should balance conscientious refusal with the patient’s interests. He should consider patient autonomy, informed consent, the patient’s health as well as doi ng the least harm. In the event that a practitioner decides to exercise conscientious refusal, it is incumbent upon the person to do a referral. However, even this choice has ethical implications because of the financial interests of the patients may contradict the referee’s interests. Choices have to be made based on the patient’s welfare (National Abortion Federation 3). Medical providers are required to refrain from coercing patient’s into abortions. Therefore, the patient must make the choice to have an abortion. However, if the patient is incompetent, then a surrogate should be selected. A provider must exercise due diligence in ensuring that the surrogate has no ill intentions. Failure to do so could result in an unethical decision. Health professionals have a series of conflicting interests that they must reconcile in abortion and patient care. These interests range from legal, moral, financial to health concerns. When deciding upon a decision involved in abortion, good practice dictates the use of morally neutral or morally good actions.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Ethics and abortion specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The practitioner ought not to intend bad consequences while the good consequences should not be directly related to the bad one (violating fetus’ rights over the mother’s rights). Ethical decision makers need to balance between the bad and good consequences of the act. Works Cited Meckstroth, Karen. Political and ethical issues in abortion today. 2011. Free Essays on Benedict Arnold

Benedict Arnold’s Other Story The story of Benedict Arnold's heroism on behalf of America, especially on Lake Champlain, is largely unknown, and it's the story we want to tell here. We'll leave those dark facts of his later defection and traitorous ways to historians. He gets plenty of bad press there...and deserves it too. As the American Revolution began, Arnold volunteered to lead 1000 men up through the woods of Maine to attack British Canada by surprise, through its back door, at Quebec City (Brody, pg. 126). This journey, which is still talked about in that part of the country, proved to be a disaster for the volunteers who marched off. Half starved, frozen, and making broth by boiling their own shoe leather and cartridge boxes, they stumbled out of the wilds 50 days later...with 40% of them dead (Brody, pg. 126-127). Many believed they would have all perished were it not for Arnold's courage and leadership in those woods. Valiant battles against overwhelming odds lay ahead through the winter in Canada, but the expedition failed. In June of 1776, Arnold, badly wounded he, led his ravaged men away from Montreal toward the North end of Lake Champlain (Randall, â€Å"Lake Champlain†). The British were hot on his trail. Emotioonal intelligence Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Emotioonal intelligence - Assignment Example There is a great deal of education about social and emotional effectiveness but many other factors and traits of personality are better predictors of success; skills, dispositions, and tendencies. It is thought possible to increase emotional knowledge and improve social and emotional functioning and because of the popularity of the thought many have sought to do though it does not necessarily make a vast difference in one’s life and the other factors are still thought more important in the overall patterns of one’s life. Emotional knowledge needs much more research before it can conclusively be depended on to change or enhance one’s patterns of success or interpersonal effectiveness. Jack Mayer believes that you cannot teach emotional intelligence and that it must instead be developed. Defining intelligence can sometimes present a problem as there are many different ways in which it can be defines; ability, skills, potential and capability are just a few of the possible definitions that are usually synonymous with

Durable Medical Equipment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Durable Medical Equipment - Essay Example The Government, through this act, intentionally ignored the fact that most of the American citizens were already in use or covered by the Medicare, Medicaid and other private insurance covers. This would not lead to the upsurge or little increase in sales of the medical devices assumed by the state to enable the companies offset the added cost of nearly $30 billion that was expected to accrue in this industry as per Congressional Budget office foresight (Bayh par 1). The company’s bottom line is that, the tax cannot be passed to the buyer, as most of those devices are directly sold to public hospitals, physicians, and other health service providers through long-term contracts signed, which locked the prices. A 2.3% tax on the company’s sales is equal to almost a 15% on the normal tax on profits, and if this added to the mandatory 35% corporate tax, it totals to 50% as the eventual tax imposed on the industry. This severely affects these companies, as they have to pay th is excise tax whether they are making sales or not (Bayh par 2). Therefore, it would have been much simpler to peg the tax on profits rather than on sales revenue.Other players in the industry such as the medical software developing companies, which are small and numbering to hundreds, are the worst hit by this legislation. Their products, Apps, have a potential for revolution in raising the practice of medicine in the US and globally (Bayh par 2). The effect of this taxation is already manifesting itself; for instance.

Examining Victimology Definitions And Paradigms Criminology Essay

Examining Victimology Definitions And Paradigms Criminology Essay The increased incidences of criminal offences in nations is a global menace which has effect on those subjected to crime and the offenders who engage in crime actions. The act of crime is brought about by breaking the law enforced by the government of nations thus there is violation of rights entitled to individuals and disruptions of well being. Victimology is category within criminology with fields such as juvenile delinquency, drug abuse, assault, murder, rape, robbery and burglary. Any one can become a victim and some are more vulnerable to victimization than others. Victimology is field of study to find facts why people are victimized and criminology is a field of study to find why crime is committed. Both fields are characterized by social, economical and political factors. Victims are blamed by society to be careless and not being able to defend themselves. There is need to understand victimizations and being a victim in order to put the strategies and precautions of being vulnerable to being a victim. Therefore there is need of Victimology as a career field to form Programmes of assisting victims to cope with the situation. Victimology as scientific field of study which focuses on physical, emotional and financial factors that people suffers from hand of criminals and the events leading to victimization, thus victimology entails study of precursors, vulnerabilities, events, impacts, recoveries and response of people, cultures and organization related to victims. The process of victimization from one phase to another is stated below as individuals can be victims of different circumstances in day to day life. Victimization is associated with sufferings, sacrifices and deaths hence victims deserve to be made whole again by restoration of their dignity and self-esteem. Definitions According to Garkawe, S. (2000) Victims are those who experiences assault. Murder, rape, robbery and burglary, loss or hardship subjected to them. The case study from Jailed: A very damaged young man and Tragic past translates to stolen future. Defines victims a: The victimization suggested here shows that individuals become victim of several circumstances caused by themselves or the surroundings. The case explains; Matthew Stuart Pearce (28) became generally victimized by the natural catastrophes which were beyond his control during his childhood. General victimization is whereby a person has suffered physical, financial or emotional damages and had experiences of their property taken, occurrence of terrific events and natural calamities. He subjected himself to juvenile delinquency victimization by becoming own victim through abuse of drugs to evade the harsh circumstances he was going through and associating with people of no help to him. Another form of victimization is child abuse; characterized by sexual harassment, physical, emotional and psychological injury. This is further caused by neglect by parents, guardian and care takers. Matthew was abused by his the parent who adopt him. Victim trauma is a result of painful and physical experienced which has a long life effect on person life. The death of mother and siblings through murder exposed him to traumatic occurrences which had high risk in harming emotional stability. Concept of Conservative Victimology S. Garkawe (2000) Statement suggests that Restoration of Justice is a systematic formal legal response to crime victimization that emphasizes on healing the injuries that resulted from the crime that had effect on victims offended, offenders and communities. This process is a derived from the traditional form of justice dealing with criminals and victims which traditionally have generally perpetuated the conflict which resulted in the original crime. It is supported by law and advocates order, this encourages offenders responsibility, involving victims in system of justice thus cutting down the government expenses. This is limited to petty offences in which the proceedings from criminal court do not result to imprisonment. Conservative nature has great effect on criminal justice policy. Suggestions for change and interventions in criminal justice is in favour of crime victims which is dominated by law and order with objective of lowering criminal victimization by emphasizing lawful and orderly society. The failure to rehabilitate and reform the policies leads to decline of support of criminal support. These increase police power and resources; they also have great influence in favour of conservative governments. They invoke victims in order to bargain for more powers and resources though penal policy is dictated to protected the community. His statement also depicts that there is believe of an individual to take responsibility. Social factors are considered not important to criminals; offenders take all blame of crime acts. Individuals are perceived to take initiative in prevention, avoidance, resistance and recovery from victimization. This is important when crime rates are predicted to have fallen down. Traditionalists emphasizes on self- reliance concept by putting stress on victims and society oriented crime prevention measures, they believe criminal acts are beyond government powers hence it is responsibility of individuals, families, institutions and religions to reduce crime. Specific victim policies as suggested by law and order are limited to personal crimes of violence against property mainly by strangers resulting from assaults, murders, rape, robbery and burglary. These instill fear of crime and useful to law and order lawyers by playing with emotions of public. Victims are perceived to be virtuous while offenders are evil doers; the advocates take advantage by appealing to emotions of public. This is more so relevant to conservative supporters specifically the advocates of victims who understand the system well making the victims statement most effective thus empowering the victims by enhancing the prosecutions successful with strong penalties achieved by spending minimum cost of government resources. This is main goal of lawyers compared to more elaborate measures to better treatment of victims within criminal justice system. Other factors associated with conservations are government initiative of compensating victims, which is viewed with ambivale nces by advocates of law and order, many will not want government to get involved in funding but prefers settlement be done by offenders. Some conservative jurisdiction governments have significantly lowered the pay for victims compensation. Restitution order is part of conservation in favour of victims of part of offenders criminal sanction. Law enforcers are in agreement that should be encouraged to save governments cost for victims compensation to enhance that offenders are accountable. Victim support services are encouraged to enhance successful prosecution so long as government expenditures not involved. Mediation between Offenders and Victims this is a formal meeting between the offenders and victim in presence of mediator to dialogue in order to find solution of the offence. This is done with aim of reconciliation by creating a mutual acceptance plan to repair harms and damages that occurred during crime offences to eliminate conflicts between the parties involved in disagreements as stated by John P. J. Dussich. Concept of Critical and Radical in Victimology It is viewed differently from conservative victimology; it is an outcome of unequal social factors like unemployment, poverty, patriarch and racism causing crimes. The need for great resources to be devoted to law enforcers agencies and prisons are agents of social control. Some suggests to be terminated where as others want to be replaced with informal justice system and that society should take responsibility for crime as a whole but not individuals. It is asserted to be no division between victims and offenders, all groups of people in society are victims. Victim compensation expands social control by insistence that victims reported the matter to police reinforced by restricted eligibility. State sponsored victims programmes are agents of supporting social control with major guiding influence not being compassionate for victims, programmes are predicated on needs of prosecution. It is opposed that crime victims having formal rights in criminal justice system and concept of victim participation in proceeding includes the effects of victims statement. Involvement of victims in justice system aids government in conviction of defendants and advocates higher penalties increasing likelihood of incarceration hence increase of social control. Restitution order against offenders is often unrealistic and lengthens offenders involvement with criminal justice in case of serious crimes; it seems genuine alternative and paradigm shift away from existing retributive criminal justice system. The concept supports mediation as explained by S. Garkawe (2000). Thus the radical paradigm concludes that crime is seen as significant problem affecting people lives, reality in crime should be analyzed beyond immediate appearance and crime control must be taken seriously. Circumstances of offenders and victims should be put into considerations when making decisions of criminal policies and the crime must be tackled by been keen with present situations in the society. Criminal justice system, prisons department and police force should not be terminated but reforms be made to put social control in place. Conclusion The laws should include services of victims, restitution from offenders, information about criminal justice system and right to formal participation of criminal justice process. The field of victimology should have professionals people with specialized training in dealing with criminal acts, offences, and victims well being to help victims to fully recover. Formal victim assistance programmes should be established by social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, medical doctors to help in counseling the victims.

Hopelessness of the Irish in Nineteenth Century England Essay -- Europ

Hopelessness of the Irish in Nineteenth Century England Throughout my research into the subject of the Irish in England's industrial north during the early nineteenth century, one fact became quite clear; contemporary writers' treatment of the Irish was both minimal and negative. I consulted many sources, Friedrich Engels, Leon Faucher, James Kay-Shuttleworth to name but a few and the reoccurring theme as pertaining to the Irish in all these works was mainly consistent; the Irish were a lazy, vulgar people prone to drinking and brawling. It was not until 1841 that Great Britain's government made its first attempt to count the number of Irish migrants in the Census of 1841. Data compiled from the actual census and other parliamentary sources at the time illuminate the fact that in 1841 and in the preceding years of this century, most migrants from Ireland were of the seasonal type. Typically, they would plant their potatoes in their mostly minuscule plots of land in May, travel to Great Britain for the summer months to partake of seasonal harvesting work and return in time for their own harvest. During this same time there were Irish who settled in Great Britain on a more permanent basis but they were outnumbered by their fellow countrymen who were strictly seasonal migrants. This latter group seemed quite successful in finding work in the agricultural districts of the industrial north, those parts of the country surrounding Manchester, Liverpool and the other great towns. After the Irish potato famine of 1822, the in flux of Irish into England grew and a large majority of these were seasonal migrants. These Irish were in great demand in the agricultural districts of England and in Labour Migration in England 1800-1850, Ar... ...ion of the Working Class in England Oxford University Press,1993. Argumentative Essay on Bilingual Education Essay

Bilingualism is the ability to speak two languages. Bilingual Education is being taught school subjects in two different languages. The United States is home to millions of immigrants each with their own native backgrounds. The United States require the immigrants to learn the full English languages when settling into the country. The schools should give the opportunity to bilingual students, or new student immigrants the advantage to learn the English language or to be taught in two different languages. This would give the students the advantage in learning two different languages that will help them in the future. They should be able to learn their own native language and speak it in private but also in public, however, they should also be taught the English language whether when entering the country, school, or private tutoring. Bilingual Education should not be forced by the government; it should be their own free chose. As the immigrants become more fluent in the English language they will have a better chance getting jobs, communication, and helping their own children learn the English language. The United States should not focus only on English Only Movement they should offer the opportunity of Bilingual Education for its citizens, but also keeping English as one of the main languages in the country. First, the United States needs not to focus on making English the only language but work more on helping the new immigrants learn the English language. The United States needs to do more to prevent the problem of immigrants in the United States having trouble getting jobs or keeping up in the classroom because they are not fluent in English. If the immigrants were taught the full English language coming into the country it will help the children in the classroom learn easier by keeping up with the teacher and also give the parents the advantage to communicate with their childrens teachers. The immigrants have a chose to choose to learn the English language freely they can still speak their own native language in wherever they want, but should be able to know the English language if they live in the United States. The United States needs to help improve the problems that the immigrants will encounter as they live in the United States and give the new immigrants an equal chance. The United States is a country mixed with different native backgrounds and ethnicties; it is always undergoing assimilation of some sort. It is like a â€Å"salad bowl† where not everyone assimilates together but is mixed together. American has a common language and that is English, but American should also not force English only on immigrants or citizens, however, they should teach the new immigrants the English language and still allow them their own native languages. The United States should not single out the immigrants by now allowing them to speak their native language in public and only speak the English language. Another reason for Bilingualism in the United States is Bilingual Education. Bilingual Education is the learning of school subjects in two languages, the â€Å"use† and â€Å"knowing† of two different languages. The United States should have certain schools throughout the country that offer bilingual classes. The students should have the chose to learn another language or to be taught English while in the mean time they still are able to learn in the native language until the learn the full English language. As the students learn another language they become knowledgeable in the writing, reading, speaking and comprehension of that language. Students in the fourth grade who are Spanish speaking natives have learned the English languages are studied on their knowledge of the two languages. The gathered stories from their families in Spanish and were to rewrite the story in English. The study shows that by having children become bilingual in two languages gave them better opportunities in life and broaden their skills in the classroom and in the social and cultural world. This study supports the argument on bilingual education for immigrants and also shows the advantages one will have by becoming bilingual. As they learn the English language, besides their own native language it can help them in many ways. As the students learn English in the classrooms they are not told to forget their own native languages. When students who speak a native language and have not learned the English language enter a classroom full of English speaking students will become intimidated and afraid. The English language is a public language used throughout the country in all different areas. As the students who do not know the English language are forced into a classroom of English only are more than likely going to fall behind the other students from not understanding completely what is being taught and said by the teacher and their own classmates. Students should have the opportunity to be in a classroom where they are taught the English language but also learning the subjects that are being taught in school. They should have the advantage to learn the subjects in two different languages so that they will have a better understanding of the subjects. After a year or two at least the students should be ready to be placed in a normal English only classroom and be able to do well. It must be a transition for the students as they are prepared for the transfer into a standard English classroom. Many student immigrants have made the transition for their own native language to the English language and become better assimilated with the country. Although most student immigrants parents are fluent in their native language most approve of their children being taught another language and becoming bilingual. The parents have a role in their childrens learning another language, however it can be crucial on their childrens development of another language as they communicate with their children in that native language in the privacy of their home. In a study most immigrant parents support bilingual education for their children and few oppose it. They believe that their children being bilingual will give them many advantages, as helping the children in the classroom or leading their children to a high career opportunity. The children are able to speak their native language at their home, but as they speak English at home they are helping their parents also learn the language. When the children know the English language it helps them be able to communicate easier with the rest of the country. Bilingual Education and Bilingualism is not something that can affect the United States in a harmful way. The United States is a free country allowing all immigrants from all diversities come into this country. America should require the new immigrants to learn the full English language so that they are able to communicate with the rest of the country and able to get jobs. Schools should give the immigrant students who are not fluent in English the opportunity to learn English and school subjects in their native languages in a separate classroom, until they are fluent enough to keep up with the teacher and the material they are taught in a standard English classroom. If America allows Bilingualism and Bilingual Education then it will give the immigrants a chance at learning English to live in the country comfortably, go to school in English classrooms and work in English jobs. They are still allowed to speak their own native languages in the public and in the privacy of their own home. Bilingualism should not be forced on anyone. It should be a transitional act to help them transform more into the United States.

Ikea Strategic in Action Essay

Part strategic position and strategic choice which mention above are underlining company environment, capability, and its strategy. Strategy in action will consider on how strategy act in organisation (Johnson et al., 2011a).This part of report will evaluate them considering their suitability. Evaluation IKEA strategies regards Suitability Suitability refers to the strategy is used to evaluate whether the strategies address the key ‘opportunities’ and ‘constraints’ underlined by the organisation’s strategic position (Johnson et al., 2008). This criterion can be examined by checking the strategic options against the environment, capabilities and the stakeholder expectations. Therefore, the analysing of PESTEL, Five Forces and strategic capabilities of IKEA in section above will be helpful for evaluating and understanding suitability. It appears that suitability is used to evaluate whether overall rationale of strategy is suitable in terms of environment and capabilities and stakeholder expectations or not. Therefore, this part of report not only evaluates IKEA strategies and capabilities regard in suitability but its successes and difficulties will be analysed. Firstly, from PESTEL analysis, IKEA takes advantage from ‘hybrid’ and ‘cost leadership’ strategy to response to its environment. IKEA’s products are cheap and differentiate; these are good opportunities to survive in economic recession. Additionally, IKEA’s core customers (middle class with moderate disposable income) are affordable to buy products even if in economic recession. Moreover, IKEA capabilities are strong global brand and low cost products with flat packaging which is its core resource and competence. Combining its capabilities and its strategies will benefit IKEA to achieve in environment changed and competitive circumstance. However, the difficulty is about import issue. All IKEA normally sources products from the same places in order to keep it standard. However, in some countries the import taxes are very high. For example in China, the import taxes on products from Poland to China are up to 22% (Burt el al., 2011). However, to stand its low price strategy and survive in China market, IKEA overcome this difficulty by sourcing goods from local country to reduce cost of taxation (Burt el al., 2011). In overall, it can be seen that in these circumstances and environmental change, the strategies IKEA has been used is a good opportunities to overcome those threats and suitable in its environment. Secondly, from Five Forces analysis, IKEA strategies and its capabilities can go along with external environment very well. It is normal that buyers are looking for cheap products but high quality. IKEA strategies are support customer needs. Furthermore, IKEA unique resources such as strong brand combining with its ‘hybrid’ strategy will maintain existing customers and gain more new buyers. In a term of power of supplier, IKEA’s strategies are suitable to supplier expectations. To generate low cost products, IKEA has to reduce cost of sale per unit by purchasing a large volume of material s from supplier. As well as suppliers, they also want to sell their products as much as possible. Moreover, considering in threat of new entry, IKEA strategies and capabilities are difficult for new entrants to compete. These are the reasons why IKEA takes opportunity from its strategies and capabilities among these threats. In addition, in the rivalry situation, it can be assumed that whether other companies offer low cost products but its quality, design, and brand image may not be the same as IKEA. IKEA considers in quality as well as the price. However, in high competitive markets, IKEA may face difficulties. For example in China which local products are normally cheap, IKEA low price strategy may not attract to this market. Giving a suggestion, in order to offer only low cost products, IKEA should build brand image as a high quality brand and offer Swedish-designed product which differentiate in Chinese customer perception. In overall, it appears that IKEA capabilities and its strategies are suitable to compete in the rivalry situation. IKEA generates its strengths and overcome the weaknesses in a suitable way. Thirdly, evaluation of suitability of IKEA strategies and capabilities according to Ansoff analysis of 4 possible development directions will be examined. The suitability will be evaluated whether these options will match to future scenario. The future scenario which matches in a term of economical environment is predicted that the world economy will maintain very weak in 2013 and slightly decrease between 2014 and 2016 (The Guardian, 2012). Apart from evaluation the suitability of IKEA strategies and capability, the suitability will be used to assessment whether IKEA strategic options meet the stakeholder expectations (Johnson et al., 2008). Table 5 Evaluation of suitability – Direction of growth In overall, IKEA strategies and capabilities are suitable in the environment and meet the expectation of stakeholders. Market penetration may be the most appropriate direction that IKEA should carry on at the present time to the future scenario predicted. There is no major investment needed. The IKEA current strategies and its capabilities is now effective under this circumstance. However, there is a difficulty in IKEA’s strategies. IKEA is a global company which generates same strategies almost every market called one-size-fit-all approach (Stern, 2012). Although, one-size-fit-all approach will benefit IKEA to control it global strategies easily, the difficulty will occur. The problem is every market is all difference. The one-size-fits-all approach on all IKEA staff and customers is good to share the same value but for all market is not suitable. The different markets have different circumstance. For example, according to Anders Dahlvig cited in Stern (2012), the differences between countries were great in China and Sweden. China is different territory. Chinese labour policies are poor for IKEA co-worker vision. Chinese workforce depends on the authority of the boss which is difficult to adapt to the more free and easy way of the new employer (Stern, 2012). Moreover, in the future, if IKEA wants to expand their market and make the differentiation, the policy and restriction in some countries may be serious such as in Islamic countries, and the differentiation needs lots of investment and knowledge. IKEA should consider how to stay the low price while a lot of investment is needed.

What little information is available suggests that there is no substantial net gain or loss in the number of Muslims through conversion globally; the number of people who become Muslims through conversion seems roughly equal to the number of Muslims who leave the faith.
